America's top jury consultant, Jo-Ellan Dimitrius, can literally read a person like a book. By decoding the hidden messages in appearance, tone of voice, facial expression, and personal habit, she has accurately predicted the behavior of jurors, witnesses, lawyers, and judges in some of the most celebrated trials of the past two decades. Now in this phenomenal new book, she applies the secrets of her extraordinary success to the everyday situations we all face at work, at home, and in relationships.

How can you "hear between the lines" to detect a lie? When is intuition the best guide to making important decisions? What are the tell-tale signs of romantic attraction? How do other people "read" us? The answers lie closer than we might think. Hair style, clothing, grooming, hand gestures, the neatness of office or living room, the steadiness of the gaze, behavior around subordinates all of these provide critical clues to a person's integrity, work habits, and sexual interests. Through vivid anecdotes and proven techniques, Dimitrius teaches us how to interpret these signs with accuracy and precision.

Whether your focus is friendship or marriage, career or family, romance or professional success, Reading People  gives you the skills you need to make sound, swift decisions and reap the benefits from a lifetime of razor-sharp insight.

"My husband and I are in the process of hiring employees for a new business we plan to open soon. I bought this book to help me develop a thought process I could use to interview prospective employees. My goal is to hire honest, positive, caring, compassionate people who have a strong sense of responsibility and accountability. I found the first half of this book to be incredibly insightful, offering invaluable information I will definitely incorporate into my interview process. So - totally worth reading. The second half of the book was less helpful for my purposes - but still good information. Jo-Ellen Dimitrius is the "real deal"! I would love to sit down with her and a glass of wine and pick her remarkable brain!"

  • Some good thoughts in this book but nowhere near the information you really need to begin to really assess people. It's worthwhile reading in parts, but doesn't quiet give you the tools you need to effectively read people. The most important thing it does teach you is to defer decision making. Most people think of reading people as being able to immediately assess someone, and the author does a great job of describing this habit as jumping to a conclusion and clearly sets out a premise for deferring judgment until you've gathered enough evidence on which to base a decision before jumping to any conclusions. That was a powerful takeaway...but then it didn't really give many insights as to psychological features. Overall, worthwhile reading in combination with other books but not sufficient in and of itself to give you any real competitive advantage. If you're looking to read people in order to avoid toxic individuals, I would recommend "The Sociopath Next Door" by Martha Stout. If you're looking for a book on personality assessment, I would recommend the book "Making Sense of People" by Samuel Barondes.
  • Most people would agree that "reading people" is a visual skill. Why then, are there no (and I mean zero) pictures in this book? Remarkably, that is only the second worst aspect of this book. The worst thing is that it supplies no (and once again, I mean zero) useful information. Oh sure, it has list on practically every page of observable behavior (clothing/physical attributes/etc.). But each behavior could mean up to a dozen different things, and no system or guidance is provided for reaching a conclusion. I am no expert on non-verbal communication, but I suspect this is the authors way of expressing the concept that if we want actual information, we should hire her as a consultant.

To save you some time and money, here is the entire book summed up in two sentances "If you concentrate on observing people, you will begin to notice many aspects of their appearance. If you apply yourself for many years to this endeavor, you will come to understand what you are looking at."

I gave up on this book at page 70. Could be there are valuable tidbits buried in the back of the book. If so, I take back everything I said, except the part about the book being poorly written.

  • This book was recommended to me by a respected educator, following a discussion about putting together a full picture of a person before entering a long term business relationship. It was somewhat helpful in that it reminds us of the connection between appearances and inner thoughts, without being overly stereotypical in our thinking. The author is a gifted jury selection expert.

That said, the book is full of repetition without a lot of tangible examples of how outward appearance actually predicted behavior. This would be extremely useful, and without it, the reader is left to identify outward markers with no idea what they could indicate. As a result, we miss out on the sum of the author's experience.

    Somewhat useful...,
  • I read this a few years back. It's not perfect, it is good. It gives insight into some behavior patterns. Helped me allot with daily interactions with coworkers. The place I work is a psychologists wet dream. Every disfunction you could think of. It helped me to avoid lots of aggravations.
  • After reading the other reviews. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I am glad I bought this book. The topic of reading people is well covered. No book will make you an expert but this one gives a good base.
  • the book will remind you of a very simple truth "there are no short cuts"
this said,it does provide clear reminders of the multiple factors to keep in mind when trying to listen and read other people
even if many of the pointers may seem obvious it is clear that we rarely take a deliberate and structured approach, not just at listening, but at reading entire situations in context; if the basics described in the book are consciously practiced these will help put information into perspective and make better informed decisions.
  • This book is excellent and the material covers quite a lot. The secret to this book is to read no more than a chapter a day. Try to apply the teachings before you move on.

My only complaint is in the edition I read (I think it is changed), the author changes pronoun gender multiple times -sometimes in the same paragraph. -it's really distracting.

However, this book's material seemed to be the best amongst about 10 books I've read on the subject.

You may want to also look into a more detailed reading on handwriting analysis if this book interests you.
