PRAISE FOR THE SURF DIVA SURF SCHOOL

"Surf Diva is the Starbucks of female-only surfing clinics; it's the model for scores of women's classes that have popped up around the world."-NEWSWEEK

"Surf Diva packed a real surf experience into two days. They taught camaraderie and chick power. They projected attitude, but not testosterone . . . Best of all, they got women . . . addicted to that rush of riding a wave. There is nothing like it." -LOS ANGELES TIMES

Surf Diva A Girl Guide to Getting Good Waves Isabelle "Izzy" Tihanyi Caroline "Coco" Tihanyi Books Reviews

  • Surf Diva A Girl's Guide to Getting Good Waves Realize this book was most likely written for the teen crowd (I am just a bit older than that ;0) But expected a little more usable content, and a bit less fluff. Somewhat disappointed! Need to write a book for those of us taking up a new sport a bit later in life!
  • This is not the usual how-to surf book. Using a girl's perspective in a guy's sport brings a fresh attitude to surfing. There are tips for using equipment and hints for a more successful experience. "The girl having the most fun is the winner" phrase is stressed because surfing is FUN! The authors have a lot of experience to share and this book will help women "bond" in their quest for the perfect wave.
  • It was a very easy read, and informative. I would have bought the wrong kind of surf board because it was cute, but with the books guidance I can choose the right kind.
  • I like this girl power book. It explains the basics in a fun and playful way. It encourages girls and makes you smile. The authors would be great mentors for the younger surfer girls generations.
  • A great beginner's reflection. Definitely gave me some things to try the next time I went out, *and* I learned about the history of women's surfing and practical how-to's. Great read.
  • Excellent book great quality, as listed
  • LOOOVE THIS BOOK.
    Came quick
I totally recommend to new and old surfers )
  • There are plenty of good tips in this book about surfing and surf culture, but it's laced with extremely condescending, sexist morsels like
-On Removing Wax "Credit cards work well for stripping wax, but this can damage the metallic strip and later cause shopping trauma at the shoe counter... better to use the library card... Or, better yet, get a guy to (do it) for you." p. 80
-On eye protection "Your eyes are harder to protect while you're in the water... make sure you're wearing sunglasses on the way to and from the beach. You can also up your diva quotient significantly with the right pair of sunglasses for your style. Accessories are the spice of life." p. 43
-On wearing shoes while surfing to guard against hypothermia "Booties are also great for protecting a good pedicure." p. 40
-Things to think about in the water "How great pink toenail polish looks in the water on brown toes... was that hottie smiling at me?" p. 125
-On training "I had to sweat and grunt and groan myself into a total state of dripping humiliation as gorgeous guys filed in and out of the locker room past my squat torture contraption." p. 126

To be reminded of how popular media and sexists expect women to feel about exercise, think, and look is not empowering, but crippling to those who want to delve into a new activity dominated by males. I was hoping for a book based on empowerment of spirit and detachment from unnecessary narcissistic ideals. This wasn't it.
